2019 National Defense Authorization Act
As of August 13th, 2020, Part B of the National Defense Authorization Act (section 889) enforces a ban on specific, Chinese manufacturers of telecom and surveillance equipment.
Enforcement of the act will require any companies engaging in or renewing US federal contracts to represent their compliance with the hardware ban. This is complicated because these brands are re-labeled by a number of other OEMs and distributors creating a landscape of dozens of companies which cannot be sold into or used by federally contracted entity.
- Huawei
- Dahua
- ZTE
- Hikvision
- HiSilicon (Hikvision affiliate)
A further complication is system-on-chip technology made by HiSilicon which is very common in lower-end surveillance equipment. Since it is difficult to determine whether a product contains a banned internal component, the research conducted and posted by IPVM.com is considered authoritative in the industry.
